Barack Obama endorses MJ Hegar

Former President Barack Obama issued his latest wave of endorsements on Friday.

Among them, Democratic U.S. Senate candidate and Air Force helicopter pilot MJ Hegar.

Hegar is facing off against Sen. John Cornyn, who has held the office since 2002.

“I’m proud to endorse these outstanding Democratic candidates who will work to get the virus under control, rebuild the economy and the middle class, and protect Americans’ health care and pre-existing conditions protections,” Obama wrote on Twitter. “Support these candidates––and vote early if you can.”

Aggregate polling shows Cornyn leading the race by several percentage points, although two recent polls show those margins tightening. Both candidates have agreed to their first debate on Oct. 9. Notably, Senator Ted Cruz often polled several points higher than Beto O’Rourke at this point in 2018 (and polled better than Cornyn does now), only to escape with a narrow victory.

On Thursday, Hegar spoke at the Texas Democratic Party’s Annual Johnson-Jordan Dinner along with Hillary Clinton and former South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg.

“The whole world is watching what is happening here in Texas,” Hegar said in a video for the virtual fundraiser. “In just a few weeks, Texans across the state are going to head to the ballot box and decide between the status quo and a brighter future for our kids.”
