Working Families Party, a grassroots political party that backs Democrats aligned with their platform, announced Wednesday they were endorsing state Rep. Jasmine Crockett for Texas’ 30th Congressional District in Dallas.
Crockett, an attorney representing House District 100 and the vice chair of the Texas Progressive Caucus, is running to succeed Eddie Bernice Johnson.
“Jasmine Crockett is the model Working Families Democrat and we’re proud to endorse her for Congress,” said Texas Working Families Party Organizing Director Mercedes Fulbright in a prepared statement. “We don’t have to wonder what Jasmine will do in Congress because we know what she’s done in the state legislature. From fighting for voting rights to police reform, Jasmine has been a voice for the progressive change we need. We look forward to organizing on the ground to make sure she’s the next Congresswoman in the 30th Congressional District.”
The endorsement comes after a member-driven process that also interviewed Jessica Mason, a Navy veteran and activist running for the seat.
“I’m truly honored to have the support of the Working Families Party in the Democratic Primary for the state’s 30th Congressional District,” Crockett said in a statement. “They were with me when I ran for the State House, and I look forward to bringing their voices with me to work everyday in Washington.”
Crockett made headlines last year for being one of the most staunch voices supporting an indefinite quorum break against the Republican-led legislature’s anti-voting rights agenda.
In November, Crockett announced her run for Congress along with the endorsement of Johnson, who represented the district for almost three decades.
This year, WFP is also backing former Austin City Councilmember Greg Casar in TX-35 and immigration attorney Jessica Cisneros in TX-28.
