There are an impressive number of women running for office in Texas. And many just raised a whole bunch of money in the third quarter that ended October 15. Here are the top nine, based on candidate filings with the Federal Election Commission.
Gina Ortiz Jones: $1,065,000
Iraq War veteran and former Air Force intelligence officer Gina Ortiz Jones is again running for Congress in San Antonio, a seat she barely lost in 2018 by half a point. Jones was one of the highest-raising Democratic congressional candidates in the state in the second quarter.
MJ Hegar: $1,029,000
MJ Hegar is an Air Force veteran and a former congressional candidate who narrowly lost her ‘18 congressional election. She is currently running to unseat John Cornyn. Hegar has raked in over $1 million in in the third quarter, just as she did last quarter.
Wendy Davis: $940,000
Former gubernatorial candidate Wendy Davis is running against Republican Chip Roy in the district that stretches from Austin to San Antonio. She is famous for her marathon filibuster to stop an anti-abortion bill.
Lizzie Fletcher $640,000
Lizzie Fletcher is a Houston-area congresswoman who won a prized seat last year, flipping it from red to blue. It’s vital to protect her seat next year.
Amanda Edwards $557,000
Houston City Councilwoman Amanda Edwards is gunning for John Cornyn’s Senate seat in 2020. One of Edwards’ fundraisers is Beyoncé’s mother, philanthropist Tina Knowles-Lawson.
Cristina Tzintzún Ramirez $459,000
Civil rights activist Cristina Tzintzún Ramirez is also running for U.S. Senate. The daughter of a Mexican immigrant, her team includes former members of Beto O’Rourke’s Senate campaign.
Jessica Cisneros: $317,000
Immigration and human rights attorney Jessica Cisneros has raised nearly half a million dollars in total in her bid to unseat conservative Democrat Henry Cuellar, the longtime congressman in South Texas. If Cisneros wins, she would be the youngest woman ever elected to Congress at age 26.
Kim Olson $264,000
Former Air Force colonel and farmer Kim Olson had previously run for Texas Agriculture Commissioner and is now challenging Kenny Marchant in a competitive district in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. She has raised $542,000 in total this cycle.
Shannon Hutcheson $210,000
As an attorney, Shannon Hutcheson did legal work for Planned Parenthood for nearly ten years. She is currently running against Rep. Michael McCaul in Austin
