TEXAS SIGNAL’s mission is to be a megaphone for the progressive voice in Texas politics. We are a political operation fueled by journalistic principles, meaning we are guided by facts and data-driven opinion but everything is seen through a left-leaning political lens. Texas conservatives have built their own media empire; we’re launching a long-term effort to balance out the information landscape in the Lone Star State.
We’re hoping to fill two roles.
Managing Editor
We’re looking for an enterprising, fast-paced journalist to be the managing director in the newsroom. We’re looking for someone with excellent news and political judgment. This is part management position, overseeing and editing a small staff of content producers, part assignment editor, and part reporter. Types of content you will focus on: breaking news, longer-form statewide election and policy stories, and thematic stories (like Texas is a swing state in 2020).
Duties include:
- In collaboration with editor in chief, developing and executing short-and long-term editorial strategy
- Manages day-to-day editorial operations of the newsroom, including ensuring deadlines are met and three social media platforms are thriving
- Has a knack for storytelling
- Serves as final set of eyes on all content prior to publication
- Trains new reporters in the Texas Signal voice and style
Qualifications:
- Minimum 5-7 years of journalism and/or political campaign experience
- Undergraduate degree
- Track record of collaboration
- Strong writing and editing experience
- Dedication to accuracy
- Expert knowledge of AP style
- Flexibility is a must since we are a classic start-up
- Investigative journalism experience is preferred.
The ideal candidate has an inventive approach to reaching people where they are online, a desire to meet business goals, and strong organizational skills.
