Unhelpful commentary from Cruz, Cornyn as Texas suffers catastrophic power outages

As millions remain without power in Texas, the state’s two U.S. Senators are facing pushback for social media posts, and for reacting too late about the dire conditions for so many Texans.

John Cornyn, who often presents himself as a compassionate conservative, was derided by many for a particular post taking aim at Interior Secretary nominee Deb Haaland on Monday.

Several people pointed out that the Interior Secretary is responsible for overseeing the management and conservation of federal lands. The Energy Department would be in charge of responding to “rolling blackouts.”

Cornyn was posting a lot to Twitter after the catastrophic winter storm descended on Texas. He retweeted messages from FEMA, ERCOT, and the Texas Division of Energy Management. However, he also decided Tuesday was an appropriate time to tweet about Bill Gates and synthetic beef.

Some on social media reminded Cornyn that when it comes to beef, he is probably not the expert.

Cruz was blasted by many in Texas for not responding seriously about the power outages. On Monday, he was responding to a post he shared from The Babylon Bee, which bills itself as a satire conservative Christian site.

On Tuesday Ted Cruz retweeted several National Weather Service accounts for Houston, Corpus Christi, and Fort Worth warning about hazardous conditions. He also posted a clip of himself on the Joe Pags show, a radio show hosted by conservative Joe Pagliarulo, urging people to stay off the roads.

Many Twitter users were reminding Cruz of posts he made last year when California was experiencing power outages after wildfires tore through the state.
