A new bombshell report from The Houston Chronicle about Greg Abbott’s latest ploy at the border involving buoys and razor wire outlines just how cruel and inhumane the governor and his enablers have become.
A trooper with the Department of Public Safety disclosed to Hearst Newspapers harrowing scenes playing out in the river. A woman miscarrying a child was entrapped in the razor wire and a four-year-old child collapsed from heat exhaustion. These are just two of the scenes that have played out in the river. Earlier this month, four people who were crossing the border, including an infant, drowned.
The trooper also noted that there is a standing order to refuse to give water to migrants. Temperatures in Texas this summer have soared to highs well into the triple digits, which increases the risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
This latest border stunt, which is a part of Abbott’s controversial Operation Lone Star initiative, has involved the physical implementation of floating cylinders and razor wire in the Rio Grande to deter migrants from being able to cross into the state. Even before the shocking expose in the Chronicle, the border stunt was also facing intense disapproval. Last week Mexico announced that it would be sending a team to ensure that the buoys weren’t violating a water treaty that is over fifty years old.
After the Chronicle report was published, the condemnations came swiftly. Congressman Joaquin Castro said that he spoke with Secretary of State Antony Blinken and called for the Biden administration to intervene against this treatment of migrants. Castro referred to the buoys and razor wire as “death traps.”
