Texas surpasses 2016 voter turnout

by | Oct 30, 2020 | 2020 Elections, Politics

Turnout numbers in Texas surpassed the 2016 total on Thursday.

In 2016, just under nine million Texans voted in the election. Texas hit that nine million mark on Thursday through early in-person voting and mail-in ballots.

Likewise, while voter turnout in Texas was dead last in 2018, in 2020 Texas is leading the nation in early vote turnout. One day of early voting remains.

“In the face of historic Republican voter suppression, Texas voters are making their voices heard at unprecedented rates,” said Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa in a prepared statement reacting to the news. “Texans are proving that they will crawl through broken glass in the battle for the soul of our nation. The Texas Democratic Party is particularly encouraged by the young voters, first-time voters, Black voters, and Latino voters making their voices heard.”
