On Thursday, 58 Texans died from COVID-19, the state’s new record for daily deaths.
The same day, 1,448 new coronavirus cases were confirmed throughout Texas, also the state’s highest-ever.
A 7-day moving average of new fatalities and cases shows both continue to steadily rise in the Lone Star State.
The new peak in daily cases and deaths comes almost exactly two weeks after Gov. Greg Abbott allowed the state’s stay-at-home order to expire. It also comes days before the governor takes extra steps to allow the Texas economy and businesses to reopen.
Since the incubation period for COVID-19 is on average up to 14 days, the new figures suggest the spike in cases is a result of ending state-enforced social distancing measures weeks earlier.
Starting Monday next week, gyms and non-essential manufacturers will be permitted to open.
