Texas Dems accuses GOP candidate of violating campaign law with negative, false ad

by | Jan 15, 2020 | Politics, Texas Elections

On Wednesday, the Texas House Democratic Campaign Committee sent a letter to cable networks asking them to remove a false ad by a Republican candidate which they argued potentially violated campaign laws in Texas.

Texas Democrats said “Gary Gates for Texas,” a political committee supporting the GOP candidate for District 28 in Houston’s Fort Bend County, is not registered with the Texas Ethics Commission.

The unregistered political committee ran a false ad accusing Democrat Eliz Markowitz of accepting money from a Florida PAC.

“These false attacks are clearly a desperate attempt by Gary Gates to distract from his abysmal record,” said Texas House Democratic Campaign Committee Executive Director Andrew Reagan in a statement. “This advertisement is false, misleading, and plainly deceptive. Residents of Fort Bend County will reject Gary Gates on January 28th.”

The race for District 28 is the first Texas House race of the year and could forecast whether Democrats will continue taking seats from suburban Republicans in 2020.
