Texas Democrats raked in $1.5 million from grassroots donors during convention

The Texas Democratic Party announced Monday that the party brought home $1.5 million in grassroots donations from the convention last week, breaking previous digital fundraising records.

The Texas Democrats’ convention went exclusively online this year as a way to socially distance and protect its voters.

A breakdown provided by the party shows 38,730 donations, on average $34 each, were made. Ninety-four percent of the donations totaled under $100 less.

According to Texas Democrats, the digital grassroots haul is more than any state party in history.

The weeklong convention saw speeches from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, former Vice President Joe Biden, and ended with a televised debate between MJ Hegar and state Sen. Royce West, the two U.S. Senate runoff candidates vying to unseat Sen. John Cornyn.

Texas Republicans have not committed to a virtual convention and are going ahead with their rescheduled in-person convention in Houston two weeks from now. The convention comes as confirmed daily cases of COVID-19 continue to climb in the state, a worrying trend considering testing has plateaued in recent weeks.
