Today is the day that we celebrate the life of civil rights hero Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Although we celebrate MLK Day every year, this time feels different. It occurs less than two weeks after a mob of white supremacists stormed the Capitol and the nation is on edge in fear of more far-right attacks. Martin Luther King’s wisdom is as relevant now as it ever was. Texans have not only been commemorating this holiday, they have also been reminding us that there is still more work to be done.
The Texas Democratic Party urged us to remember Dr. King’s words as we look to a new year.
Rep. Colin Allred of Dallas invoked the famous arc of the moral universe as a call to action.
Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson said that Dr. King’s work lives on through us all.
Rep. Joaquin Castro reminded us that the fight for racial justice is tied to economic justice.
In a thread, state Rep. Gene Wu of Houston echoed similar sentiments, pointing out that Dr. King was labelled a terrorist and communist for his activism.
Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner commemorated MLK Day with a day of service.
Enjoy your holiday, but remember that there is still much that we need to do if we are to realize Martin Luther King’s dream.
