The youth environmental group, Sunrise Movement, has officially endorsed Jessica Cisneros for Texas’ 28th Congressional District. Cisneros is running against Henry Cuellar, one of the most conservative Democrats in Congress, who notably opposes much of Biden’s Build Back Better agenda.
The group previously endorsed Cisneros when she ran against Cuellar in the 2020 Democratic Primary. The 2020 race was among the closest in the country, Cisneros only lost by around 3,000 votes. Two years later, Cisneros has more name recognition and endorsements from national progressive groups, posing a real threat to Cuellar’s re-election.
Following the endorsement, Cisneros Tweeted, “I am beyond proud to be the Sunrise Movement’s first U.S. House endorsement this cycle. Sunrise backed our campaign 2 years ago & helped us come within 3K votes from defeating ‘Big Oil’s favorite Democrat’.”
Cuellar has been a thorn in the side of House progressives for some time, with the Squad often clashing with his conservative approach on both economic and social issues. Cuellar’s “fiscally responsible” attitude, during a global pandemic, may come back to haunt his re-election chances.
TX-28 voters will have the opportunity to vote in the primary on March 1, 2022.
