Several Texas Democrats call for the removal of President Trump

by | Jan 7, 2021 | Politics, Trump Tragedy

In the aftermath of rioters breaching the Capitol, incited by the rhetoric of President Trump, several Texas Democrats are joining a chorus of calls for Vice President Pence and the U.S. Cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment against the President.

All the Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee signed a letter urging Vice President Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment. Texan Reps. Veronica Escobar, Sylvia Garcia, and Sheila Jackson Lee are all members of that committee.

The calls for the 25th Amendment are also coming from the highest levels of Democratic leadership. Both Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (who will regain the title of Senate Majority Leader after Rev. Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff are sworn into the Senate) and Speaker Nancy Pelosi have said that if the Vice President and Cabinet fail to remove Trump from office, impeachment proceedings may occur.

The House was slated to go on recess, but many members including Rep. Lloyd Doggett are calling for those plans to be scrapped in favor of impeachment if the Vice President and Cabinet fail to remove Trump from office.

Another Texas Democrat that has called for the removal of President Trump is Rep. Joaquin Castro. He has also called for the resignation of Senators Ted Cruz and Josh Hawley. Before the pro-Trump mob breached the Capitol, Cruz had just objected to the electoral college certification of Arizona.
