On Wednesday, several San Antonio and Austin Labor Unions announced their endorsement of Greg Casar for Congress. Casar, an Austin City Council member, is running to represent TX-35 in the U.S. House of Representatives.
The Communications Workers of America District 6, Laborers International Union of North America, Southwest Laborers District Council, LiUNA Local 1095, San Antonio Building & Construction Trades Council, and UNITE HERE Local 23 were the unions that officially announced their endorsement of Casar at the press conferences on Wednesday.
“From affordable housing, to fair chance hiring, to safer jobs for construction workers, he has been a driving force for equality in his district,” said Matt Gonzlaes, Business Manager for LiUNA Local 1095. “We look forward to the hard work that will take place and to great achievements when Greg represents TX-35.”
Claude Cummings Jr., Vice President of CWA District 6, praised Casar for his experience fighting for labor rights. “Throughout his career as a labor and community organizer and a member of Austin City Council, CWA has fought alongside Greg Casar towards our mutual goal for justice and opportunity for all working people,” said Cummings. “Working families and organized labor in Texas urgently need a tireless fighter such as Greg Casar in the United States Congress.”
Casar has been a notable advocate for labor rights since he was first elected to Austin City Council. During his time in office, he helped pass a paid sick leave ordinance in Austin as well as raise the city’s lowest employee wages to $15 an hour.
“I’ve worked alongside these union members to successfully raise wages, pass paid sick leave, and deliver health benefits to working families,” said Greg Casar. “I’m honored to receive their endorsement. Together, we can deliver on fair wages, Medicare for All, and a functional electric grid for all Texans.”
Central Texas voters will have the opportunity to vote in the primary in March 2022.
