On Friday, 50 members of the Democratic Women’s Caucus sent a scathing letter condemning President Trump’s actions toward women.
The Democratic Women’s Caucus is composed of all women in the House of Representatives. Its Vice Chair is Rep. Veronica Escobar of El Paso, who has also been selected to give the Democratic response to the State of the Union address.
“We are writing this letter in response to your continuing derogation of women in your rhetoric and policies.” read the letter.
The letter cited a number of policies enacted by the Trump administration that were harmful toward women, including “stripping away women’s access to health care, undermining protections for survivors of sexual assault, reversing equal pay efforts and more.”
The Caucus also slammed Trump’s rhetoric. The most recent example, and the catalyst for the letter, was Secretary of State Mike Pompeo disparaging a well-renown female journalist. Trump responded to Pompeo’s outburst by saying “you did a good job on her.”
The Trump administration’s treatment of former Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch, whom Trump referred to “the woman” who is “going to go through some things” in his infamous July 25 call with Ukrainian President Zelensky, was cited as further evidence of misogyny.
“Mr. President, instead of being the biggest bully on the playground, why don’t you set a moral example for our children?” the letter concluded.
