Op-ed: Republicans Have Gone Too Far on Social Issues

by | Aug 12, 2022 | Opinion, Republican Party

It’s only been a few weeks since extremists on the Supreme Court rolled back abortion protections and Republicans are finally starting to see the consequences of their own actions.

Not only have these extremists targeted abortion rights but now they’re also going after same-sex marriage and contraception. In his concurrence opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, Clarence Thomas said, we “should reconsider all of this Court’s substantive due process precedents, including Griswold, Lawrence, and Obergefell

These are the actions, not of a party looking to win future elections, but a party seeking to mold the country to fit their extremist version of a society.

Same-sex marriage, abortion, and contraception may not be traditional electoral motivators, but in an era where 71% of Americans support same-sex marriage, 61% of Americans support abortion access, and 90% support contraception options like condoms and birth control, one has to wonder what the end-game is for the Republican Party.

By focusing on delivering for the most extreme part of their base, Republicans have alienated a majority of voters across the spectrum who believe in these fundamental rights.

In fact, polling since the Supreme Court’s decision has actually helped Democrats up and down the ballot. Democrats are now actually projected to maintain control of the Senate and House, something unthinkable just a few months ago.

Republicans have shown us who they are, religious extremists looking to take our society backwards. Hopefully, the voters can send a resounding message in November that rejects the backwards worldview of the modern Republican Party.
