An internal poll released Monday of Texas’ 10th congressional district shows Democratic candidate Mike Siegel locked in a tight race with incumbent Republican Rep. Michael McCaul.
The poll shows Siegel down by two percentage points, 43 to 45. The same poll shows former Vice President Joe Biden tied with President Trump in the district, 47 to 47.
The internal poll is the second survey of the race this year. A poll in August showed Siegel trailing by several percentage points.
Congressman McCaul has held the district since 2005. Siegel, a former educator and attorney for the city of Austin, is running a corporate PAC-free campaign to oust him. The Signal profiled Siegel earlier this month about his race and how his campaign is bringing progressive ideas to a battleground district.
Monday’s poll isn’t the only survey showing congressional Democratic candidates with striking distance to Republican incumbents.
Another internal poll released in mid-September in Texas’ 3rd congressional district shows Democrat Lulu Seikaly about even with Van Taylor. A second internal poll released around the same time shows Democrat Julie Oliver almost even with Roger Williams.
At least a dozen congressional races in Texas are considered competitive, according to the Cook Political Report. The districts most likely to flip include those with open seats vacated by retiring Republicans.
