New poll: MJ Hegar down three points against Cornyn

A new poll released Friday by Public Policy Polling shows U.S. Senate candidate MJ Hegar in a tight race with incumbent Republican Sen. John Cornyn.

The poll of 700 Texas voters conducted last week shows Cornyn leading by only three percentage points, 49-46.

Two other past polls conducted by the same group show Hegar has narrowed the gap throughout the race. The former Air Force helicopter pilot began the general election trailing Cornyn by seven points, then four points last month, and now three.

An aggregate of polls shows Hegar trailing Cornyn by single digits, including a Texas Tribune poll that saw Cornyn eight points ahead earlier this month.

The new poll comes as early voting in Texas underway. Early voting in Texas will stretch until Friday, October 30.

The new polling also comes as recently released fundraising hauls point to a competitive race and as Senate Majority PAC, a major national Democrat super PAC, announced it would be backing Hegar with an $8.6 million TV ad buy.

On Thursday, the Signal interviewed Hegar about COVID-19 relief, expanding the Supreme Court and climate change.
