Bad news for Trump and Cornyn in Texas

A new poll on Tuesday shows registered voters in Texas are choosing a Democrat for president over Donald Trump by five points. And 56% of those surveyed — in Texas — disapprove of the way Trump is handling his job as president. The poll was conducted by Univision and the University of Houston.

The news comes ahead of the Democratic presidential debate in Houston on Thursday. Seven reputable polls show a Democrat is tied or besting Trump in the Lone Star State.

Additionally, the Univision/UH poll shows Sen. John Cornyn statistically tied against a generic Democratic opponent. 41 percent of registered voters in Texas say they would vote for Cornyn in November, with 40 percent voting for a Democrat.

“Bad news is coming in threes today for Senator John Cornyn as new polling shows the Texas Senate race in a dead heat and Texas Democrats report ‘record fundraising,'” the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee said in a news release. “Meanwhile, as Texas shifts in Democrats’ favor, Cornyn is facing ‘smoldering dissatisfaction within his base‘ and a primary threat from a ‘high-profile‘ Tea Party challenger who is certain to drag the already out-of-touch incumbent even further to the right.”

On Monday, state Sen. Pat Fallon announced he is seriously considering challenging Cornyn in the GOP primary.
