New Democratic challenger takes on Rep. Dan Crenshaw in Houston

Prominent political advisor, attorney, and philanthropist Sima Ladjevardian announced on Monday she is running for Congress in the second congressional district that includes parts of Houston and Kingwood. Rep. Dan Crenshaw, a Republican, currently holds the seat.

“Hey, #TX02! I’m Sima and I’m running for Congress. I’m a Houstonian, mother of two, breast cancer survivor, and community leader,” she tweeted on Monday.

Ladjevardian was a prominent fundraiser for Hillary Clinton and a senior advisor to Beto O’Rourke. She founded Big Hearted Texas, which focuses on engaging and mobilizing the greater Harris County community and taking action on issues like human trafficking.

“Great news for Texas and the country,” O’Rourke said on Monday of her candidacy. “Sima is one of the smartest, hardest working people I’ve met. She helped produce record turnout in 2018 in Texas for my campaign and will beat Crenshaw in 2020 in hers!”

Ladjevardian joins two other Democrats, Travis Olsen and Elisa Cardnell, in the March primary. O’Rourke lost the district by a single point in his 2018 bid for U.S. Senate.

This is a developing story that will be updated. Ladjevardian has been an advisor to Texas Signal.
