Musings: Let’s Talk About Your Bracket

by | Mar 15, 2021 | Musings, Opinion

There’s nothing I love more than a good tournament. Basketball, football, softball, baseball, combat sports, cricket. You name it, and if they play it in a tournament format somewhere, I can probably get down with it.

If only there were a way that would allow me to combine that love for competitive tournaments with my combine for politics. Luckily, this year at Signal, we’re making it so.

Nominations are now open for our 2022 Governor’s Race Bracket Challenge, and we want to hear what you have to say! Is there a candidate you’re itching to see take on Greg Abbott in 2022? Having a hard time deciding who you think Democrats should nominate? Now is your chance to weigh in on the biggest race in Texas in 2022.

The rules are simple. You can send us your entries via email or Twitter. At the beginning of the day on Friday, our team will review the submissions and release the official bracket on our site and social media with detailed explanations for how we’ll seed the tournament. From there, we’ll open voting up for each first-round matchup to our readers, who will select those lucky souls who advance to the Round of 8.

Who can you nominate? Anyone your heart desires, but this bracket is meant for candidates in a potential Democratic primary, so leave Sid Miller out of this. You can nominate your County Judge, state representative, former candidates who you love, or even eclectic choices like Matthew McConaughey, Beyonce and Gregg Popovich. We only ask that they be a living, breathing Texan to be considered and that you explain a little bit about why you think your candidate belongs in the tournament and would make a good governor.

But challenges have prizes. Will there be prizes? You better believe it. We’ll be sending stickers and t-shirts out to readers who submit the best nominations and brackets, so keep them flowing all week. The more you enter, the more chances you have to win.

Here’s how to play:

Send your nominations to editor@texassignalarchive.com with BRACKET as the subject line, or send us a tweet @texassignal to submit your nominations. Bonus points if you fill out an entire bracket.

On Friday, March 19th, we’ll announce the top 16 nominations and release the full bracket, and the games will begin.

Send us your nominations now, and share this post with your friends. The more votes your nominees get, the more likely your entries are to be selected for some of those sweet, sweet prizes.
