Mike Pence to visit Dallas for “Celebrate Freedom” event at megachurch

Officials say that Vice President Mike Pence will visit Dallas for First Baptist Church’s “Celebrate Freedom Sunday” on June 28. Pence’s appearance will come eight days after Trump’s rally in Tulsa, the first such rally since March, where Pence is also scheduled to attend.

First Baptist Church is home to a 14,000-person congregation. Its senior pastor, Dr. Robert Jeffress, is one of the president’s evangelical advisers and a staunch Trump ally.

Mike Pence’s appearance will be Dallas’ second dose of the Trump administration this month. After a pandemic-induced hiatus from campaigning, Trump visited Dallas for a roundtable on police brutality. Dallas’ district attorney, police chief and sheriff, all of whom are African-American, were excluded from the roundtable.

Trump then attended a fundraiser at the home of the CEO of the company responsible for the Dakota Access Pipeline, where tickets were over $500,000 per couple.

With polls showing Trump neck and neck with Joe Biden, it’s no surprise the Trump campaign isn’t taking Texas for granted. Two appearances in one month is yet another sign that the GOP knows that Texas is the largest swing state.
