Mega-Texas donor is busted giving Cornyn illegal campaign contributions

Major political donor and former University of Texas regent James Dannenbaum has admitted to breaking campaign finance law in support of three federal candidates in 2017, including U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, according to the Houston Chronicle on Thursday.

“Dannenbaum, his influential Houston firm, Dannenbaum Engineering, and its holding company, have been charged with aiding a former employee in February 2017 to knowingly make conduit contributions aggregating between $10,000 and $25,000 for candidates, meaning they donated more money than federal law permitted and by illegal means,” the Chronicle reported.

Team Cornyn said it would return the donations to the U.S. Treasury.

“The campaign was not aware of what Mr. Dannenbaum was doing and we will fully cooperate with the U.S. Attorney’s office,” a Cornyn campaign spokesperson said. “We take great strides to ensure all contributions are proper and follow the law.”

The case is currently under investigation by the Justice Department following FBI raids.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
