Matthew McConaughey really is considering running for governor

by | Mar 11, 2021 | Politics, Texas Elections

For years, the speculation that Matthew McConaughey might make a run for statewide office was bubbling around Texas. Yesterday, the actor and author took his biggest step in confirming political ambitions.

McConaughey’s revelation came on the Balanced Voice podcast from Crime Stoppers of Houston. He and host Rania Mankarious had been talking about his leadership roles, and his mentorship of young children. McConaughey then reflected on what could come in the future. “Because I do think I have some things to teach and share, and what is my role? What’s my category in my next chapter of life that I’m going into?” he said.

Mankarious later alluded to a potential statewide leadership role, possibly as Governor of Texas. McConaughey called that a “consideration.” Current Governor Greg Abbott is up for reelection in 2022.

Earlier on the podcast, McConaughey also discussed the recent winter storm and the disastrous power and water outages that occurred in the state. He then announced that he would be releasing a full list of artists and companies joining him for a virtual benefit on behalf of Texas on his Instagram feed.

A one-time romantic comedy leading man, McConaughey pivoted to more serious roles, including an Oscar-winning turn in Dallas Buyers Club. Last year, McConaughey released the book (he avoids the word memoir) Greenlights. He wrote the book in the desert, using journals that he has kept over the years.
