Lawsuit Filed Over Law That Restricts Care For Transgender Minors

Five families have sued the state of Texas over Senate Bill 14, which would prevent transgender minors from receiving certain medical care including puberty blockers and hormone therapies. Greg Abbott signed SB 14 in June, and it is set to take effect on September 1.

Other plaintiffs in the lawsuit include medical professionals and two LGBTQ organizations. They lawsuit was filed in Travis County, and the plaintiffs are looking to receive an injunction which would block the law from being implemented. The plaintiffs are being represented by the ACLU, the ACLU of Texas, the Transgender Law Center, and two law firms.

The ACLU of Texas provided several statements from family members involved in the lawsuit. “As a parent, I don’t want to see my child suffer and don’t understand why the state government would try to strip away my ability to seek the best possible health care for my child,” said Lazaro Loe regarding his daughter, who is a transgender 12-year-old girl.

Across the country, several laws passed in other red states restricting care for transgender youth have been halted. However, in Tennessee a federal appeals court reversed an injunction against a law that would restrict medical care for transgender minors in that state.
