Latino Victory Fund, a political action committee that backs progressive Latinos running for office, announced another wave of endorsements on Friday, this time for two congressional candidates: immigration attorney Jessica Cisneros in Texas’ 28th Congressional District and former Austin Councilman Greg Casar in Texas’ 35th Congressional District.
Cisneros is again running against conservative South Texas Democrat Henry Cuellar and Casar is running for an Austin-San Antonio seat occupied by Rep. Lloyd Dogget, who is running in Texas’ new 37th congressional district.
Both candidates are running on a platform that includes a $15 minimum wage, canceling student debt, single payer Medicare for All and a Green New Deal.
“The Latino community in Texas is young and predominantly progressive,” Latino Victory Fund President Nathalie Rayes said in a statement. “We must elect more Latinos to Congress who reflect this growing demographic.”
The endorsement of the two congressional candidates comes ahead of a major get-out-the-vote rally in San Antonio on Saturday that will feature Cisneros, Casar and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who has endorsed both candidates.
Along with the endorsement of Casar and Cisneros, Latino Victory Fund also announced their support for former Dallas County Assistant District Attorney Alexandra Guio, who is running for Texas House District 114.
In January, Latino Victory Fund endorsed Brownsville attorney Rochelle Garza in her bid for Texas attorney general.
The group spent almost half a million dollars last election cycle in supporting Candace Valenzuela, a Dallas area school board member that came within one percentage point of defeating Rep. Beth Van Duyne in Texas’ 24th Congressional District.
Early voting for Texas primary elections begins on Monday, Feb. 14.
Primary Election Day is March 1.
