Today Latino Victory Fund, a political action committee that backs progressive Latino candidates running for office, announced they were endorsing Mario Castillo in a Houston city council election.
Castillo is running in District H, and previously served as the Chief of Staff for the outgoing councilmember Karla Cisneros. If elected, Castillo would become the first LGBTQ+ person elected to represent that district.
In a statement announcing their endorsement, Latino Victory touted Castillo’s commitment to increasing affordability in the district. “The grandson of an immigrant and native of District H, Castillo will continue to be a champion for his community —as he has been for his entire civic career,” said Sindy Benavides.
“Castillo is running on a strong platform centered on investing in District H and supporting small businesses to build stronger, safer, and more affordable neighborhoods,” continued Benavides. “Castillo also has bold plans to provide District H’s neighborhoods with the tools needed to protect themselves from gentrification and expand access to affordable health care.”
Castillo’s career in public service began as an organizer, helping people enroll for health insurance through the Affordable Care Act. He currently serves as the Executive Director of Your Houston, a grassroots, nonprofit that seeks to improve the quality of life in the city of Houston. Castillo has endorsements from current Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia and former Houston Mayor Annise Parker.
In addition to city council races, Houston will also be electing a new mayor in November. Just yesterday a former at-large council member Jack Christie announced he was entering the crowded mayor’s race which also includes State Senator John Whitmire and Congressman Sheila Jackson Lee.
The election in Houston will be Tuesday, November 7.
