Latino Victory Announces new Slate of Texas Endorsements

Latino Victory Fund, a political action committee that backs progressive Latino candidates running for office, announced a new slate of endorsements ahead of the May runoff. They cap off a busy endorsement cycle for Latino Victory, which has increasingly extended its presence in Texas.

Latino Victory Fund made their four endorsements official today. The candidates they are backing are all Latina and include: Cassandra “Cas” Garcia Hernandez, candidate for House District 70; Ina Minjarez, candidate for Bexar County judge; Celia Israel, candidate for Austin mayor; and Lina Hidalgo, running for reelection as Harris County judge.

Both Garcia Hernandez and Minjarez are on the ballot in the May runoff and have the opportunity to make history. Garcia Hernandez would be the first Latina to represent House District 70, a newly redrawn district in Collin County, which itself is transitioning in its ethnic and political makeup. Minjarez would also be the first Latina Bexar County judge.

Hidalgo and Israel are on the ballot in November. Hidalgo has been the target of some recent and concerted attempts to sully her reputation in Harris County. Israel’s candidacy could make history if she wins, as she would be the first Latina and openly LGBTQ mayor of Austin.

In a statement, Nathalie Rayes, the president and CEO of Latino Victory Fund lauded the four candidates for their progressive credentials. “We’re proud to support Representative Israel, Representative Minjarez, Judge Hidalgo, and Cassandra because they’re seasoned community leaders who advocate for progressive values critical to moving Texas forward,” said Rayes.

Rayes also stressed the importance of the Latino vote for November and beyond. “Latino voter mobilization will be key for Democrats running up and down the ballot in the midterms—and these candidates have what it takes to inspire and energize Latinos,” continued Rayes. “They’re running historic races that will grow  Latina representation in the Texas government and break barriers in powerful seats where no Latina has been elected before.”

The four endorsees join a roster of candidates that Latino Victory has previously backed including Rochelle Garza for Attorney General, Jessica Cisneros running against Henry Cuellar, and State Representative candidate Alex Guio in Dallas. The group also endorsed Greg Casar, who handily won his primary in March.

Early voting in the runoff begins May 16, and election day is May 24.
