Julián Castro and Beto O’Rourke to visit migrant detention centers in Texas today

Both Texans in the 2020 presidential race are back in the state holding public events. Last night, Julian Castro attended an Austin fundraiser organized by the Texas Democratic Party.

“A few months ago, they were writing me up as the other Texan,” Castro said. “But that is no more. I am the Texan.”

Team Beto, also in Austin yesterday, shot back that there are two Texans in the race and, essentially, that only one helped bring Texas to its swing-state status through the statewide Senate campaign last year. O’Rourke lost to Ted Cruz by less than three points and raised a staggering $80 million.

On Saturday, both campaigns are holding events at migrant detention centers in the state: O’Rourke in Houston at Southwest Key, Castro at now infamous Border Control facility in Clint, Tex., where reports surfaced of inhumane treatment of young children.

The clash between the two Texas candidates began Wednesday night at the first presidential debate, where Castro went after O’Rourke on immigration.

This is a developing story. The Signal will have full coverage of both candidate visits to the detention centers on Saturday.
