The Texas Senate unanimously voted on Wednesday to expand the list of medical conditions doctors can legally prescribe marijuana to treat.
Using the state’s medical marijuana program, healthcare providers would be able to prescribe low-THC cannabis for conditions like seizure disorders, multiple sclerosis, autism, and terminal cancer.
Under current law, only Texas with epilepsy could seek state-approved marijuana prescriptions under the Compassionate Use Program.
The bill is set to return to the House one more time this week before potentially heading to Gov. Greg Abbott to sign it.
Roughly 700 Texans with epilepsy are currently working with the state for their marijuana prescriptions, according to one recent count by Texas Public Radio.
Other conditions that could be legally treated with cannabis if the bill comes to pass are spasticity, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and incurable neurodegenerative diseases.
