UPDATED: Politico reported late Monday that Sen. Cornyn called the racist tweets a “mistake” and “unforced error.” Nothing more.
As has been widely reported, President Trump tweeted overtly racist comments over the weekend about four members of Congress, all of whom are women of color.
Trump told them to “go back and help fix the totally broken and crime-infested places from which they came…You can’t leave fast enough.”
Three of the four were born in the U.S. and all are American citizens.
Sens. John Cornyn and Ted Cruz, Gov. Greg Abbott, and Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick responded in this way to Trump’s comments:

The Dallas Morning News reported Cornyn declined to comment on the matter.The Texas Democratic Party didn’t.
“It’s no surprise that spineless and weak John Cornyn would refuse to condemn Donald Trump for clear and racist language,” said the party’s communications director Abhi Rahman. “Cornyn doesn’t understand what it means to be an American or a Texan—a bi-product of spending the last twenty years climbing the Washington Trump Republican ladder.”
On Monday, Trump doubled down on his remarks, telling reporters the congresswomen “hate America” and “I don’t know who’s going to miss them.”
Meanwhile, Democratic presidential candidate Julian Castro, former mayor of San Antonio, didn’t hold back.
