After receiving some heat on the campaign trail, Mayor Sylvester Turner is punching back at Tony Buzbee with a hard-hitting ad highlighting his opponent’s recent DWI.
The ad shows a mugshot of Buzbee following a 2016 drunk driving arrest and suggests that a $10,000 campaign contribution made by Buzbee to then-Harris County District Attorney Devon Anderson allowed him to escape charges when he was later arrested.
“Tony Buzbee is one of Donald Trump’s biggest donors,” the ad says. “And just like Trump, he’s trying to buy his way into power.”
Buzbee, a millionaire attorney, gave $500,000 to inaugurate Trump as president.
Turner continues to lead comfortably in the mayor’s race, according to a recent KHOU 11/Houston Public Media poll that placed Turner first with 37 percent of the vote, and Buzbee with 20 percent.
Houstonians will vote for their next mayor on November 5, 2019.
