HouseCleaning: District 54

by | Feb 25, 2020 | 2020 Elections

This week we are looking at House District 54 in Central Texas, which includes all of Lam-pasas County and about half of Bell County. The majority minority district includes Killeen, Harker Heights and a part of Fort Hood.

The current representative of District 54 is Brad Buckley, a freshman Republican from Salaydo who’s now running for his second term. In 2018, Buckley won by just 4,000 votes, while Beto O’Rourke missed carrying the district by just one percentage point.

Looking at his legislative record, Buckley hasn’t accomplished much in his term thus far, but has managed to co-author several bills that restrict a woman’s right to choose, co-sponsor a religious freedom bill called the “Save Chick Fil A Bill,” and has numerous pro-gun votes, including allowing guns in places of worship and school parking lots.

In his first legislative session Buckley earned a dishonorable zero percent rating from Equality Texas, has already been endorsed by Governor Greg Abbott and received nearly $20,000 in contributions from disgraced Texas Speaker of the House Dennis Bonnen’s campaign.

It’s time to do some house cleaning.

Buckley’s potential Democratic replacement, Likeithia “Keke” Williams, is a retired military member, who is running unopposed in the March 3rd Primary.
