House sends articles of impeachment to Senate

On Wednesday, the House voted to send articles of impeachment to the Senate and approved seven impeachment managers who will lead the prosecution in the trial. Rep. Sylvia Garcia of Houston will serve on the prosecution team.

“I’m humbled to be one of the seven  House #ImpeachmentManagers and take seriously my solemn duty to uphold and defend the Constitution,” tweeted Garcia. “The Constitution as our guide, we will make our case and present the truth to the American people.”

Garcia will join a diverse team that consists of Reps. Adam Schiff, Jerrold Nadler, Jason Crow, Val Demings, Hakeem Jeffries, and Zoe Lofgren in making the case before the Senate that President Trump is guilty of impeachable offenses and should be removed from office.

As a member of the Judiciary Committee, Garcia had previously participated in impeachment hearings conducted late last year.

The impeachment case revolves around two articles. First, the president abused his power by using the powers of his office to pressure a foreign nation into assisting his re-election. Second, the president obstructed Congress by refusing to cooperate with the impeachment inquiry and ordering his administration not to comply with House subpoenas for witnesses and documents.

The House had previously voted to pass articles of impeachment in December, making Donald Trump the third president in American history to be impeached. As per the Constitution, the Senate will hold a trial to decide whether to remove the president from office.

Senators will be sworn in as jurors by the end of this week and the trial is expected to begin on Tuesday. The issue of whether to have witnesses testify in the trial, a major point of contention between the Democratic leadership and Senate Majority Leader Mitch Mcconnell, remains undecided
