On Thursday, Gov. Greg Abbott announced he would call a second special session set to begin on August 7, Saturday.
The second special session is set to begin one day after the conclusion of the first, which was derailed when Texas Democrats broke quorum last month and fled to Washington to push for federal voting rights legislation.
“I will continue to call special session after special session to reform our broken bail system, uphold election integrity, and pass other important items that Texans demand and deserve,” Abbott said in a statement.
Abbott’s second special session contains similar agenda items, including election integrity and anti-trans sports legislation. Lawmakers will also decide to address federal COVID-19 funding and funding for the legislative branch, which Abbott vetoed following the regular session.
Education, border security, and medical abortion are also on the agenda.
Texas Democrats have repeatedly committed to permanently breaking quorum for this special session, but the caucus has not said how they would react to future special sessions.
