In a letter obtained by The Texas Signal, Gov. Greg Abbott asked his supporters to help him “defend” Texas.
“If we’re going to DEFEND Texas, we’ll need to take matters into our own hands.” In the following sentence, the governor cites statistics of undocumented immigrants crossing the U.S.-Mexico border.
Later in the letter, he asks recipients to sign a statement of support to “DEFEND TEXAS NOW.”
“The problems of illegal immigration never reach swanky limousine-liberal neighborhoods in New York and California!”
The fundraising appeal was dated Aug. 2, a day before the terrorist attack at an El Paso Walmart.
In his troubling manifesto, the white nationalist who killed 22 people and injured many more made his motive clear. His attack, he wrote, was in “response to the Hispanic invasion of Texas. I am simply defending my country from cultural and ethnic replacement brought on by an invasion [italics added].”
The “urgent” letter by Abbott, who said in 2015 he was “embarrassed” Texas didn’t have more gun sales, lays out what he sees are the consequences of inaction on immigration.
“Doing nothing will only lead to disaster for Texas, both economically and politically. Securing our border should be the federal government’s job.”
