Elizabeth Warren ramps up campaign in Texas

With Super Tuesday right around the corner, Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s campaign is making a play in Texas. Warren is scheduled to hold a town hall in San Antonio on Thursday with former HUD Secretary and presidential candidate Julián Castro.

“Elizabeth and Sec. Castro know that to create real change – to rebuild the middle class and save our democracy – we need to dream big and fight hard,” reads the event invite. “That’s why they’re in this fight: to have a real conversation about how to level the playing field for working families, and who is best to lead that fight.”

Castro endorsed Warren in early January, days after suspending his own presidential bid. “Elizabeth and I share a vision of America where everyone counts. An America where people—not the wealthy or well-connected—are put first,” he tweeted at the time. “I’m proud to join her in the fight for big, structural change.”

Warren’s town hall with Castro comes after her campaign embarked on a five-city tour in the Lone Star State with the goal of reaching Latino voters. The tour was conducted by campaign surrogates, including Rosie Castro, a civil rights activist and mother of Julián Castro, although Warren herself was not part of the tour.

On Friday, Warren snagged a high-profile endorsement from Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo. “The Elizabeth Warren you speak with one-on-one is the same Elizabeth you see on the stump,” Hidalgo said in a statement. “She’s a genuine person who will tell you exactly what she believes and where she stands,”

Warren’s visit is just the latest sign that the Democratic primary race is heating up in the Lone Star State. The latest poll shows a tight race in Texas, with Sanders and former Vice President Joe Biden in a virtual tie at 22.1 and 22.5 percent respectively. Warren is in a close third place at 18.3 percent, within striking distance of the two frontrunners.

Early voting in Texas is already underway and will end on February 28. The primary itself is March 3.
