Donald Trump Jr. called him Trump’s “biggest ally.” He has voted with President Trump 95% of the time, according to FiveThirtyEight.
So it’s no surprise that Sen. John Cornyn has been standing by his man since the announcement of the impeachment inquiry into Trump’s illegal actions asking foreign countries to interfere in American elections began. He has defended the president ad nauseum, but it’s a weak defense. And Cornyn is an attorney who served on the Texas Supreme Court at one point in his 30-year career in politics.
The thinking must be, come hell or high water, Cornyn will go down on Trump’s titanic.
Democrats running to unseat Cornyn in Texas are wasting no time in calling him out. Here’s what some of them told us (or pointed to prior statements).
Civil rights leader Cristina Tzintzún Ramirez
“By tirelessly defending this morally bankrupt administration, John Cornyn is failing his state and he’s failing his country. Our democracy is at stake and history will not be kind when it judges Trump’s leading defenders like Cornyn.”
State Senator Royce West
“Cornyn’s radical far-right ideology is in step with Trump’s tone, temperament, and blatant disregard for the rule of law.”
Former Congressman Chris Bell
“If Trump turns out to have broken his oath of office for personal and political gain, will Cornyn continue to be Trump’s water boy?”
Air Force veteran MJ Hegar
“Texas will be watching to see if Sen. Cornyn will step up to put the future of our democracy before partisan politics.”
What’s interesting is the senator is not just issuing a statement here and there defending the president. It’s a flood-the-zone strategy of constantly talking about impeachment and how wronged Trump is. In the past 24 hours, Cornyn has sent 10 tweets on impeachment. The Dallas Morning News found him tweeting or re-tweeting 50 times in a week on the same subject. So what actual work is he getting done on behalf of Texans?
