A gunman opened fire inside of an El Paso Walmart on Saturday, killing at least 19 people and injuring at least 22 others, according to authorities. One suspect is in custody, according to CNN.
2020 presidential candidate and former El Paso congressman Beto O’Rourke said the mass shooting was “truly heartbreaking.” O’Rourke became teary-eyed when going before cameras discussing the incident. He has canceled campaign events to return home to El Paso.
Current El Paso congresswoman Veronica Escobar issued a statement Saturday.
“Today, El Paso is facing the indescribable pain and horror that too many other American communities have had to endure. We are grateful for the courage of our first responders, law enforcement, and El Pasoans who are helping one another. And to all of us who have the power to end this horror – I am imploring that we come together, and once and for all address the gun violence epidemic that plagues our nation.”
