Cornyn stands strong with Trump over impeachment

Sen. John Cornyn and other Texas Republicans are loyally uniting behind the president as Democrats push for more details concerning Trump’s dealings with Ukraine.

Reacting to the decision by House Democrats to launch a formal impeachment inquiry over the recent scandals because of grave constitutional concerns, Cornyn said on Tuesday that Democrats would face a “huge backlash,” according to Politico. “I’m kind of scratching my head why all of a sudden the House’s hair is on fire,” he said.

He also argued the Democrats’ claims about the president are based on “hearsay.”

But on Wednesday, the White House released the memorandum of a phone call that corroborates why the House’s “hair is on fire.” The rough transcript released by the White House shows Trump asking Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky — a foreign power — to investigate Biden and his son.

Like Cornyn, other Texas Republicans are already voicing their support for the president or attacking the growing suspicion by Democrats who are rallying around impeachment.

Prior to the transcript’s release, other Republican congress members from Texas dismissed Democratic suspicion around Trump’s dealings with Ukraine as nothing more than animosity toward the president, without mentioning the constitutional matters in question.

Texas Democrats are united in pushing forward with impeachment proceedings with their core message being the president violated the Constitution. All 13 of Texas Democrats in Congress are open to an impeachment inquiry. The Trump-Ukraine affair has also trickled down to the Senate race, with Democratic hopefuls looking to unseat Cornyn — State Sen. Royce West, Cristina Tzintzún Ramirez, former congressman Chris Bell and Sema Hernandez — calling for impeachment.
