In a press conference last week, Joe Biden announced six executive orders on gun policies. The six orders include an annual report on gun trafficking from the Department of Justice, filing “ghost guns” and pistols with modifiers under the National Firearms Act, creating nationwide Red Flag laws legislation, and supporting government gun violence prevention programs.
“Enough prayers, time for some action,” Biden said on Thursday.
In a series of tweets the same day, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott wrote that President Joe Biden was threatening the 2nd Amendment.
“He just announced a new liberal power grab to take away our guns,” Abbott said. “We will NOT allow this in TX. It’s time to get legislation making TX a 2nd Amendment Sanctuary state passed and to my desk for signing.”
Earlier that week,Texas politicians passed a bill that would ban federal enforcement of firearms acts on Texans.
And 103 miles away in Bryan, Texas, another mass shooting occurred which left one dead and five injured.
Federal Legislative Lead for the Texas chapter of Moms Demand Action, Karen Knapp, said it’s “gratifying” to have a President and Vice-President who promotes gun safety, but said there is still a long way to go.
“Our federal government tries to do something positive for public safety and our state legislators are doubling down on bad gun laws,” she said.
Biden also pressured the U.S. Senate to pass three new bills to reauthorize the violence against women act, close loopholes in background checks, and ban assault rifles and high capacity magazines altogether.
Knapp said Moms Demand Action supported all six of Biden’s orders and his nomination of David Chapman to become director of the alcohol, tobacco, and firearms bureau.
“He’s a very experienced law enforcement officer and an expert on guna safety,” she said. It’s huge that someone like him is going to lead the ATF and enforce gun regulations.”
