Beto says he’s not planning on running for Texas governor

Former congressman Beto O’Rourke says he has no plans to run against Gov. Greg Abbott in 2022.

That’s according to an upcoming episode Lone Star Politics Podcast, reports the Dallas Morning News, who runs the podcast with NBC 5.

“I’ve got no plans to run, and I’m very focused on the things that I’m lucky enough to do right now — organizing, registering voters and teaching,” O’Rourke says in the episode. “I’m just going to keep doing what I’m doing now.”

The El Paso Democrat said he will continue to work with Texas civil rights groups and instead floated the names of Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins and Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo as good potential challengers to the incumbent governor.

“We have no shortage of talent and no shortage of challenges that we have in this state because of Greg Abbott’s failed leadership that we can correct with competent leaders moving forward,” O’Rourke said. “There’s more than enough for a candidate to run on, and more than enough qualified Democratic prospective candidates to do that job. I feel very good about our prospects in 2022.”
