AUSTIN—At the 2019 Texas Tribune Festival on Saturday, Democratic presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke called on President Trump to resign. O’Rourke drew parallels to former President Richard Nixon, who resigned before Congress moved forward with certain impeachment.
When asked by NBC News moderator Garrett Haake if an O’Rourke presidency would pardon Trump, he said “no.”
Republican senators need to sit down with the president and tell him “there is no way out of this,” O’Rourke said at a news conference following the event. There is “sufficient evidence” to bring articles of impeachment, he said.
On Friday, O’Rourke called on the U.S. House to begin impeachment proceedings immediately.
“The House should cancel its break and start impeachment proceedings now. As the whistleblower made clear: Every day Trump is in office, our democracy is less safe. We can’t wait to act,” O’Rourke tweeted.
On the U.S. Senate race in Texas, O’Rourke projected confidence that one of the leading Democrats would beat John Cornyn in 2020.
