On Wednesday, Texas gubernatorial candidate Beto O’Rourke announced a college tour to register as many college students as possible before the Oct. 11 voter registration deadline.
The 15-stop college tour will begin on Sept. 26 at the University of Texas in Austin and end on Oct. 5 at Texas State University in San Marcos.
“It’s young leaders all across this state who are creating the change right now in Texas,” O’Rourke said in a prepared statement. “We’re showing up to bring them into our growing movement of more than 90,000 volunteers so we can get after the big things that we all want to accomplish together.”
According to the campaign, O’Rourke will focus on talking to young voters about climate change, gun reform, abortion access, raising the minimum wage, marijuana legalization and decriminalization, expanding Medicaid, and making college more affordable.
The tour includes four-year universities, historically black colleges/universities, and two-year community colleges.
Major stops include Prairie View A&M and Texas Southern University on Sept. 27, followed by Texas A&M, Baylor University, and the University of Texas in Arlington on Sept. 28.
This tour comes after a recent poll by the University of Texas at Tyler and the Dallas Morning News showed O’Rourke trailing Republican incumbent Gov. Greg Abbott by nine points.
The poll also showed Abbott with 34 percent strongly disapproving of his handling as governor and 25 percent strongly approving.
