Bernie Sanders overtakes Joe Biden in latest Texas poll

This story initially reported on the Tribune poll incorrectly. It has been updated.

New polling from the Texas Tribune and the University of Texas released on Friday shows a shift in the Democratic presidential primary.

Sen. Bernie Sanders has taken the lead in Texas with 24 percent of support among Democratic voters, followed closely by former Vice President Joe Biden at 22 percent, Sen. Elizabeth Warren at 15 percent and Michael Bloomberg at 10 percent.

And the president remains under water among all voters in the state; more than half of those polled wouldn’t re-elect him.

This is the first Texas-specific poll showing Sanders ahead in the Lone Star State.

Prior to that, Biden had a comfortable lead since the beginning of the primaries.

Despite Sanders overtaking the former vice president, Biden’s support in Texas has only diminished slightly since the last UT-Texas Tribune poll in November, where he held 23 percent of support. The same poll showed Sanders in fourth place at the time.

The Vermont Senator’s strong showing in the state comes days after his campaign announced it was opening three new field offices and a headquarters in Texas, and about a week after the campaign announced it would invest $5.5 million in television and digital ad buys in Super Tuesday states, including Texas.
