Amanda Edwards snags multiple newspaper endorsements

On Sunday, former Houston City Council member and Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Amanda Edwards received an endorsement from the Beaumont Enterprise. Days earlier, Edwards received endorsements from the San Antonio Express-News and the Dallas Morning News as well.

“Edwards is an attorney who understands the lawmaking process,” wrote Beaumont Enterprise editorial board. “Her focus on goals like better health care and more economic opportunities for Texans are issues that Senate candidates need to be talking about.”

The San Antonio Express-News, which endorsed John Cornyn for the Republican nomination and Edwards for the Democratic nomination, highlighted Edwards’ experience and pragmatism. The board went on to conclude that a Cornyn vs. Edwards Senate election would be one for the books: “Edwards is confident she can inspire and build a coalition of communities of color, young people and the ‘persuadable’ voters who went for O’Rourke. If she can — and her talents appear immense — a race between Cornyn and Edwards would be one of the most compelling in the nation.”

The Dallas Morning News endorsed Edwards as well as State Sen. Royce West. Like other editorial boards, they zeroed in on her pragmatic approach to government which they argued would help her and the Democratic Party in the election.

“Edwards represents the direction the Democratic Party in Texas should follow — a person focused on solutions over soundbites who would dilute some of the partisan poison that is wrecking the country,” the Dallas Morning News wrote. “She also focuses on issues that middle-of-the-road Democrats, and many Republicans, will find appealing, specifically increased access to lower-cost health care and expanded economic opportunity.”

Early voting in the Texas primary has already begun and ends on February 28. The primary will take place on March 3, Super Tuesday. With polls showing that none of the Democratic Senate candidates have a clear majority, the race will likely enter a runoff.
