On Tuesday, abortion activists began traveling to Mississippi as part of a “Liberate Abortion Caravan,” a journey from Austin to Mississippi to raise awareness about the nationwide attack on abortion rights.
The caravan departs from Austin on Tuesday, will stop in Houston the following day, and plans to reach Jackson, Mississippi on Friday, June 17.
The action is organized by more than 150 reproductive justice rights organizations and abortion providers.
Speakers include Cathy Torres, organizing manager at Frontera Fund; Dyana Limon-Mercado, executive director at Planned Parenthood Texas Votes; Diana Gómez, advocacy director at Progress Texas; Marva Sadler, director of clinical services at Whole Woman’s Health; Rosann Mariappuram, executive director at Jane’s Due Process; Rev. Erika Forbes, chief visionary officer at Envision Justice, and Rev. Natalie Webb, advocate for Just Texas.
The caravan comes a month after a leaked Supreme Court memo showed the conservative court’s intent to overturn Roe. V Wade, and almost 300 days after the state’s six-week abortion ban Senate Bill 8 went into effect.
