On Monday, Business Insider reported Chick-fil-A would be changing company policy and ending donations to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the Salvation Army, two groups that have long been criticized for their anti-LGTBQ attitudes.
The company’s latest move has apparently upset Gov. Greg Abbott, who reacted to the news late Monday.
“I’m headed to Bill Miller’s tonight,” Abbott tweeted.
Bill Miller B-B-Q is a Texas-based BBQ and fried chicken restaurant.
The news comes months after the Texas Legislature passed an anti-LGTBQ bill that bans Texas governments from denying contracts and other agreements to people because of their religious beliefs. Religious freedom is already protected in the Constitution.
“In the midst of a legislative session meant to prioritize public school reform, property taxes and expand economic opportunities for all Texans, I am disappointed that SB 1978 [the “Chick-fil-A bill”] took energy away from passing proactive legislation that actually improves Texans’ lives,” Rep. Mary González, chair of the Texas Legislature’s LGBTQ Caucus, told NBC News in a statement at the time.
“Further, in 2017, 42 percent of LGBTQ teens in Texas said they had considered suicide — the harmful rhetoric perpetuated by this bill adds to a culture of bullying, shame and isolation already faced by LGBTQ youth in our state,” she added.
