Today at a press conference at the Texas Democratic Convention, lawmakers and abortion rights advocates announced a five-point plan for the Biden administration to follow that will restore access to abortion care in Texas.
The letter outlines five strategies for the federal government to help Texans access FDA-approved medication abortion. They include declaring a public health emergency to protect providers who distribute medication abortion, establishing a federal program for providers, and utilizing the federal government’s supremacy over state laws.
At the press conference, Greg Casar, the democratic nominee for the 35th congressional district, said that “Texas brought us Roe v. Wade, and it’s going to be up to us to bring it back.”
State Rep. Donna Howard, who also signed onto the letter to the Biden administration, needed a brief pause during her remarks at the press conference because she was so upset. She urged the federal government to take immediate action. “Women could be dying right now,” she said.
After the press conference the Signal spoke Howard. “It’s imperative that the Biden administration take action now,” she said. She also said that she is hearing from constituents about the impact of abortion bans, including concerns about attending college in Texas.
Howard also noted that she’s heard concerns from providers because the Texas law is so ambiguous. “We must have intervention from the federal government to stop the carnage.”
